Pre-A/N: Birthday fic for Megan! Happy Birthday bb <3

When he sees the man with the short black hair walk into the grocery store, Jin doesn’t know what to do.

For six months now, the guy has been coming to the store three times a week. Always around the same times, always on the same days. Even when it’s getting a bit late and Jin thinks that the guy isn’t going to come - he does. The latest he’s ever been is 15 minutes.

The guy always buys the same things. Always. It’s like he wants Jin to remember it. And Jin does.

It’s Friday so the guy was there that same morning. He always comes Friday at 11am. Now it’s nearly 5pm and Jin’s shift is almost over. The guy is still wearing the same thing he had in the morning but his hair’s a bit messed up. Jin decides to blame that on the wind. As soon as he guy is properly inside, he passes his hand through his fringe and moves it out of his eye - kinda. Jin can’t stop staring at the guy. It’s been going on for a few months and since then, he’s been expecting the guy’s visits. He doesn’t care if they barely talk, he just wants to see him and he he wants to make him smile.

One time, a few months ago, he had kept a box of the guy’s favourite cookies at his cash register because they were on sale and because he knew that they were going to run out. The guy had been thrilled when Jin gave him the box of cookies and Jin had felt his heart melt.

But anyways, Jin doesn’t want to get carried away. Again. Ryo’s already told him more than once that he was staring.

On Fridays, the man buys dairy products like milk and yogurt, fruits, vegetables and a box of cookies. In general it’s always the same items but it seems the guy has a schedule that he seems to follow. He buys apples every two weeks, bananas every three and potatoes every second Friday of the month. The box of cookie changes every week but Jin’s noticed that the guy likes double stuffed Oreos the most - And Jin would know - he rings them up more than any other cookie they sell.

Every two Mondays the guy comes in the store at 7pm to buy his meats, bread, cereal products. Ground meat, cold cuts, bread, rice and fish. But he only buys fish once every four weeks and rice every two.

He also comes to the store every Wednesday - but rarely buys anything. Sometimes a fruit, sometimes pasta or sauce. Jin came to the conclusion that it probably depended on the meals he was preparing that week and that he had sudden cravings for junk food. Like last Wednesday - he bought ice cream. Jin had never seen him buy ice cream before.

For the whole day, Jin has been hoping that the guy would come back. He knows it’s a stupid and his idea probably wasn’t going to work but he can’t help but hope. Hell, Ryo laughed to tears when Jin told him what he’d done. Serves him right for thinking he could confide in that midget.

But there he is, standing in front of Jin’s counter. The midget was wrong. I repeat. The midget was wrong!

Jin smiles and turns to face the man, trying to smile as if he hasn’t done anything wrong. “Hi again! What can I do for you?”

~

Kame has been going to this supermarket for about six months now.

His previous one closed down and after panicking for a week or two, he found another one that had everything he needed.

He’d gone to a few in his area but there was always something bugging him. Whether it was the way the items were organized or the weird looks that the cashier was giving him, Kame just didn’t like it.

He’d found this supermarket after expanding the size of his comfort zone. One or two train stops more wouldn’t kill him.

The first night he goes, it’s mostly to look around. At first glance, everything thing seems to be in order. Over the alleys, items are clearly identified, indicating the number of the said alley and on which side of it the item can be found. Frozen foods aren’t near the bakery like the last place and the fruits are with the vegetables, where they should be. He picks up a few items and goes to pay. It’s time to test the customer service.

The guy is awfully chirpy, for someone working at a supermarket at 8:15pm on a Monday. But Kame doesn’t mind. He feels more at ease than at the last 3 stores he’s visited.

The first place he’d gone to, the lady at the cash wouldn’t stop chewing gum and it annoyed him more than he’d ever admit it. He didn’t mind gum but he’d always thought that when you’re speaking to someone (especially a stranger) you should spit out the gum.

The second place, the guy reeked of axe deodorant. Kame wasn’t sure if it was because the guy didn’t believe in showers or because the guy didn’t have a sense of smell but he didn’t want to take the risk of always having him as a cashier.

The third place was something else. The personnel had been overly happy to greet him - which kind of freaked Kame out. He felt like he was in a store in Shibuya 109 with the girls shouting ‘welcome’ at the top of their lungs in the most annoying tone of voice possible. In that store, he bought a box of cookies and left.

This place however, seems fine. Employees had politely greeted him with a nod of the head and he’d been left to his own to look around and assess the area. The music was low and pleasant and the store was very tidy.

As far as the chirpy cashier went, Kame found it enjoyable. The guy greeted him in a normal tone of voice, asked the basic chit-chat questions and made him pay. He doesn’t reek of deodorant, he isn’t chewing gum and, bonus points, Kame has to admit that the guy’s kind of cute. Maybe even cuter than that Uchi guy from his old place. Totally his type too - not that he’s going to ask the guy out or anything. That would be awkward. Thinking about it, Kame doesn’t even know what he’d say to bring up such a conversation. Besides, he sucks at flirting. What was he supposed to do? Buy something that expires the same day and say The tag says ‘best if used today’ but it’s too much for me alone, can I make you dinner~? No. that wouldn’t pass. Besides, Kame knew he’d choke on his tongue before saying something like that. Also - what if the guy agrees? That means that he has too cook for two. And he wasn’t ready to cook for two!

So he settles on their ‘customer - cashier’ relationship and decides that the cashier’s second job is eye-candy - though the guy doesn’t have to know.

Step one had been passed. Now Kame only needed to come back a few more times to see if the ambiance stays the same. If not, back to the drawing board!

He’s a bit bothered when the cashier he had had last time isn’t there. Well, maybe he is on a break or maybe he is in the back but Kame isn’t going to ask. It’s only his second visit, after all.

The one that makes him pay is fine - Kame can’t complain (much). The guy’s a bit rough around the edges but he doesn’t smell and he’s polite. In Kame’s book, that passes.

For the next couple of weeks, Kame does his shopping there, adapts his hours a little bit to match the ones of the cashier he’d had the first day. Their schedules seem to fit together so that helps a lot.

Kame likes stability. He likes having a schedule to follow with hours that came along with it. He likes having something to do and something to hold onto. He doesn’t mind change - provided he’s warned before. Like his old supermarket, for example. Their close-down wasn’t sudden. They’d put a notice in the window one month in advance, giving him the time to find somewhere else and allowing him to still shop there as he did.

Having the same cashier all the time helps with that. The guy doesn’t ask useless questions about his life, he doesn’t question the way Kame placed his items on the conveyer belt or how he buys specific items on specific day. To Kame, the guy is like ‘la crème de la crème’ of grocery store cashiers. If there is such a thing.

One event, four months in, confirms everything Kame has been thinking about the kind of customer service this place offers. Although everything has been going great - one person had gone the extra mile and Kame hadn’t been able to hide how happy it had made him.

His day had been going great. He was on time with everything and his school projects were progressing according to plan. He consults the store’s weekly flyer to check the deals so he can write his grocery list according to it. It’s Friday so he’s going to buy his milk, fruits and veggies and a box of Oreos. He’s in luck too! Oreos are on sale this week!

Sadly for Kame, when he gets to the store, they’re out of double stuffed Oreos. The normal ones are also on sale but it’s not the same. He still takes them, but only because he wants Oreos. He figures he’ll ‘create’ the double stuffed… although he’ll end up with two cookies without cream and that’s not what he wants either.

Upon arriving at the register, the cashier flashes him a smile and Kame is immediately confused. Sure, they smile to each other but he could sense that there was something more to it. “Is there something on my face?” Kame asks the cashier, unsure of what to do at this point. He pats down his cheeks, wondering if there actually is something but the cashier shakes his head.

“No, I just have something for you,” the other says. “We didn’t have much on stock and I noticed they were on sale so I kept a box for you.”

“A box of…?” Kame prompts, arching an eyebrow as he tries to understand the point that the guy is trying to make.

The cashier turns his back to Kame and takes something from underneath his cash register and puts a box of double stuffed Oreos in front of the both of them. “Jan~” He smiles and Kame can’t help but smile back. “I noticed you liked these so I figured I’d keep you a box, just in case.”

Man, even Uchi, the cashier from his old place wasn’t that devoted. Somehow, this means a lot to Kame and he finds himself appreciating it more than he probably should. It’s not a big action per se, but he really appreciates it.

He likes this place and he really likes the cashier. Hopefully, it won’t close down.

A few months later, Kame’s home and he feels like baking something. Something fruity. It’s Friday so he goes to the store that morning and got everything he needs, fruit wise, and goes home. But upon looking at his peaches, he notices that most of them are bruised - which is odd. It hasn’t happened to him before. The cashier had specifically given him these ones so - considering how Kame trusts him, he hadn’t looked at the peaches at all. Now he’s going to have to do it every time, just to make sure.

He sighs, just what he needed, another little quirk to add onto his list of many. He looks at his watch and sighs once more. It’s almost 4pm. He never goes to the store on Fridays at 4pm… but if he doesn’t go - he’s stuck with bruised peaches that are bruised beyond salvaging.

So he goes to the market, much to his dismay. He doesn’t like confrontation and he hates returning things but he really needs the peaches.

He takes a deep breath and goes to the service counter - as luck would have it, his usual cashier is there. His shift probably ends at 5 and it’s a quarter to.

“Hi again! What can I do for you?” The guy says.

Kame immediately notices that the other cashier that’s always there, the one that’s rough around the edges, is standing near, placing things on a shelf but that he seems to be listening. Something is most definitely up.

“I, uh, need to return these peaches,” he says as he puts the transparent bag holding the peaches on the countertop. “You gave me bruised peaches this morning,” he adds, just to make sure the cashier knows. But, at the same time, he doesn’t want to make the other feel bad but it’s too late - he can’t take it back.

Kame furrows his brows when the guy doesn’t move or doesn’t answer. The only thing that does happen is that the guy gradually turns pink all over his face. A patch on his neck, one on his cheek… it continues until his whole face is covered, all the way to the tip of his ears. The guy placing the cans on the shelf starts to cough, startling the both of them and the cashier starts to brush through his hair with his fingers.

"I sold you the bad piece of fruit because I wanted you to come back to the store," he blurts out, his eyes wide with panic.

“What?” Kame asks, chuckling a little bit, not 100% sure he heard correctly.

The man sighs, “I... sold you the bruised peaches so you would come back,” he admits. The guy in the back isn’t placing anything else on the shelves now, he’s just laughing.

Kame’s officially confused. “Why would you want me to come back?”

“To...ask you out,” The guy says and Kame can’t help but burst out laughing, catching the cashier off-guard and making him stagger back a little bit.

“I’m sorry,” Kame says as he’s trying to catch his breath. “I didn’t mean it like that.” Man, he hasn’t laughed like that in years and no-one has ever been this original it ways of asking him out. “It’s just, I was here this morning - why didn’t you just ask me then?”

“Because he’s an idiot,” The guy rough around the edges answers instead of the cashier.

“What he said,” The cashier says, smiling slightly.

“Wow, alright,” Kame laughs. “So? What are you waiting for?”

The guy’s eyes go wide. “Whaddyou mean?”

“You wanted to ask me out? Ask away,” Kame says with a chuckle, gesturing himself.

“B-But, can’t you just answer now?! After I’ve embarrassed myself in front of…” The cashier looks around, only to realize that there’s not one there and he points his co-worked. “In front of Creepykido!” He says.

Kame frowns, “We’ll that’s an awfully unfortunate name. ‘Creepykido,’” he repeats, now chuckling. “Hopefully yours is nicer?”

“A-Akanishi,” Akanishi replies. “Jin,” he quickly adds.

“Pleasure to meet you, now - are you going to ask me out~?”

“Just like that?” Jin asks.

“Just like that~” Kame replies.

“Ryo fuck off will you?!” Jin says to the guy with the rough edges. Now at least Kame can say that the guy’s name is ‘Ryo Creepykido’. Poor kid must’ve been beaten up with he was in school. When Ryo finally leaves, muttering a few swears as he does, Jin turns around and looks at Kame with a cute blush over his nose. “Dinner - tomorrow night, 6pm?” He asks simply.

“It’s a date,” Kame smiles.

“Meet here? I know a good place right around the corner.”

“Sounds great. Now, if I could only have my peaches, I’ll be on my way~”

Jin gives him a bag of peaches and Kame inspects them, just to make sure, but they’re perfect. “I didn’t catch your name, by the way,” Jin blurts out just as Kame’s getting his phone and earphones out.

“That’s because I didn’t tell you~” Kazuya chuckles before passing his bag over his head to have it across his hip. “Kamenashi Kazuya,” he says and Jin smiles. “You can call me Kame.”

~

When Kame leaves, Jin can’t help but let out a huge sigh of relief. He hasn’t asked anyone out in ages. The other person normally makes the first steps - not him.

When Ryo comes back, Jin’s smiling and cleaning his register. He’s leaving in 3 minutes anyways so he doesn’t want to start a task that he can’t finish.

“So I’m guessing he said yes?” Ryo asks, leaning on the conveyor belt of Jin’s register.

“He did~” Jin hums, logging off of the terminal and turning to smile at Ryo.

“Don’t look so happy - if it wasn’t for me you wouldn’t even have this date.”

“You laughed when I told you about the fruit thing!”

“Well yeah! Any normal person would laugh, Jin! That was beyond stupid! Man, can't believe that worked.”

“Well it did so ha. Now I have a date and you have…” Jin grimaces. “Your left hand or whatever.”

“Oi!” Ryo snaps, holding his left hand to his chest. “Don’t diminish Nancy!”

Jin’s face stays serious for a good second before he chuckles, “Nancy?” he repeats, “I would’ve put my money on ‘hand-solo’”

“Fuck off Akanishi.”

~

Jin can barely sleep that night when he thinks about the date he has planned. He doesn’t want to go for a typical dinner and movie but he hopes that a dinner and a walk around town will suffice. He wants to get to know more about Kame. Beyond the grocery shopping he does and his love of double stuffed Oreos.

The date itself goes better than he could’ve ever imagined. The conversation just flows and they laugh to a point where wine comes out of Kame’s nose and Jin has to give him his napkin. It’s easy and light. Jin’s happy and so is Kame.

Just like Jin planned, they walk around town for a little while after finishing dinner. At some point, they walk back towards Kame’s metro station because the last train is scheduled to pass soon. Unfortunately for Jin, he’s taking a train in the opposite direction. They exchange numbers and once Kame gets on his train, Jin walks towards his. He’s thinking of texting Kame, his messaging app is already opened and he’s ready to type but the other beats him to it. They text for the whole train ride, sending each other pictures of what they could see out of the windows. It’s stupid and useless, Jin knows that, but he doesn’t care.

Jin plans to bring Kame to a small fireworks show the week after but they never make it. They forget to look at the time and when they finally get to the place after finishing dinner, it’s over and everyone’s gone. Kame says that he doesn’t mind, that he’s still enjoying himself but Jin’s still on the edge about it. He feels like it’s his fault even though it’s not and he promises to make up for it.

He’s still apologizing when he’s turned around and pulled forward. Before he understands what happened, he’s being let go and Kame’s there in front of him, smiling like the day Jin gave him a box of double stuffed Oreos. That’s when it hits him - Kame kissed him! Maybe it was just to shut him up or maybe it actually meant something but Jin doesn’t really care. He finds himself mirroring Kame’s smile and his hand naturally finds Kame’s at their sides.

He finds himself thinking that he should’ve given Kame bad fruit a long long time ago.
